Biography

Having featured for King's Park during WW1, Gentles signed up with Woodside on his return to Arbroath and he played with the local junior club up until mid September 1922 when he was signed up at Gayfield after he'd impressed in a friendly match at Gayfield the previous month.

Gentles was in and out of the team in his first few months at Gayfield before getting a run of games through spring 1923 but after a poor season for the club he was released that summer and he went on to join Arbroath Athletic.

After impressing with Arbroath Athletic, Brechin City signed him up in February 1924 and he spent several years at Glebe Park before returning to Gayfield in early August 1927. In his first season back in maroon, Gentles managed to bag 26 goals despite the team finishing in a mid table position and the following season he was again a key player as the team just missed out on promotion in the last few weeks of the season.

After leaving the club in June 1929, he spent two seasons with Montrose before signing with Arbroath Vics.
