Mutch was signed from Banks O' Dee in mid August, just after the start of the 1933-34 season. He quickly established himself in the front line and he only missed two competitive games during the campaign, one of which took place prior to him signing. During the second half of the season, Mutch had scouts from all over Scotland and England coming to see him play and the club began to receive offers for the 22 year old. The club decided to keep Mutch until the end of the season in the hope he would help secure promotion, but unfortunately we just missed out and that summer Mutch was sold to Manchester United for a fee of around £1000.
Mutch spent three years at Old Trafford, his first season at the club seeing them win the English Second Division. He would then go on to play for Preston North End, where he was an FA Cup winner in the 1937-38 season, scoring a penalty in the last minute of extra time to secure the trophy. During WW2, Mutch made appearances for his hometown team Aberdeen before signing for Bury for the 1946-47 season. He went on to join Southport where he spent time as player/ trainer before returning to his native Aberdeen and becoming manager of Banks O' Dee in 1950.
