Stewart was signed by Ian Stewart in mid-September 1981 from Brechin City in a fee that was decided as £12,000 by a tribunal, and he became a regular in our central defence throughout the 1981-82 season. In late August 1982 he moved to London for work, before returning to Scotland just under two years later and returning to Gayfield, this time under the management of George Fleming.

He played regularly for most of the 1984-85 season, and for the first half of the following campaign before falling out of the team through injury in January 1986 and failing to win back his place. After not featuring competitively for several months, he was allowed to leave to join Highland League Huntly in late April.
