Dougie was signed from Montrose in July 1981, manager Ian Stewart paying a club record fee for of £20,000 for the forward. During his first campaign at Gayfield he scored at over a goal every two games, but he struggled to keep his goalscoring form up in his second year at the club and during his third and final season he only managed a solitary goal in 19 appearances before being given a free transfer in May 1984.
