Biography

Tam came through Arbroath Lads Club, joining Dundee in October 1962 and spending several years at Dens Park but never managing to break through into the first team. After his release in May 1966, he was signed up by Albert Henderson the following week. In his first campaign at Gayfield, manager Albert Henderson initially used him as an inside right, before he dropped back to play at right half midway through the season, a position he would make his own throughout the rest of the 1960s and 1970s. Towards the end of his time at Gayfield, he would also be used as a sweeper.

During the 1967-68 campaign, his second at Gayfield, he played a huge part in the club winning promotion to the top division, playing in 41 games that season. The club was relegated after just one season in the topflight, but after several seasons they returned with a promotion winning 1971-72 campaign during which Tam played in 45 games. Three seasons at the top tier of Scottish football followed, with Tam a mainstay in the team throughout this time.

After continuing as a regular over the next few years, Tam missed a large part of the 1977-78 season after suffering a leg break during a League Cup match against Raith Rovers early in the campaign. He returned for the last few months of the season and was once again one of the first names on the team-sheet for the next two years. In March 1980, in recognition of his 14 years playing for the club, Tam was given a testimonial against Aberdeen.
The 1980-81 season was a frustrating one for Tam, with various niggling injuries keeping him out of the team for most of the campaign, and the only three appearances he managed were made early in the season. At the end of the campaign Ian Stewart, who had replaced Albert Henderson in January 1980, gave Tam a free transfer.

Overall, by our records, Tam is our second highest appearance holder, and our highest post World War 2 appearance holder. He was one of the very first people to be inducted into our Hall of Fame and for football fans of a certain generation he will always be one of the first names to be associated with Arbroath Football Club.
