Biography

Payne was signed from St Columba Boys Club in the summer of 1970 and the 18 year old went straight into the team as a regular during the 1970-71 season. He only missed one competitive game the following campaign which saw the club win promotion to the First Division, and he continued as a regular throughout the following season in the top league. During the following two years he struggled for game time, and in February 1975 he was transfer listed at his own request due to a lack of game time, and at the end of the season he was given a free transfer and went on to join Forfar Athletic.
