Ian came through Arbroath Lads Club before being snapped up by Preston North End and after nearly a year at the Lancashire club he returned to Arbroath and signed up at Gayfield in December 1960. He quickly became a regular in our starting line-up, featuring in various positions across the front line, before spending the majority of the 1961-62 season on the right wing. He continued to feature regularly for the following three seasons, continuing to feature in various roles on both the right and left of the forward line before giving up playing in March 1965 due to work commitments.

Despite not playing between March 1965 and May 1966, the club kept his registration but despite talks of him returning late in the 1965-66 season, he never played for the club again and he was given a free transfer in May 1966, going on to sign for Forfar Athletic the following month.
