The Lichties were stunned by a controversial 89th minute penalty decision which swept away hopes of a morale-boosting victory over Division Three pacesetters Stenhousemuir. Arbroath seemed to be heading for a hard earned win after taking the lead early in the second half when Jay Stein grabbed his first league goal for the club with a stunning 20 yard volley which flew high into the net past the helpless Willie McCulloch. The home side's prospects seemed even brighter shortly afterwards when Stenhousemuir's Colin Cramb was sent off after retaliating with a raised elbow to a rash challenge from Kevin McMullen. The Arbroath defender was yellow carded for his part in the incident. But referee Scott MacDonald infuriated the home support with little more than a minute left on the clock when he awarded the Warriors what seemed to be a rather soft penalty. Stenhousemuir's Paul McGrillen tangled with McMullen inside the box, and the striker appeared to trip over the ball as the players jostled for possession. The referee immediately pointed to the spot, however, and McGrillen calmly stepped forward to send the ball firmly beyond Mark Cairns to preserve the visitors unbeaten league record.
Arbroath battled to a deserved win as Angus rivals Montrose finished the match at Gayfield Park with 10 men. Montrose took the lead after four minutes when Martyn Fotheringham curled in a beautiful a free-kick. Arbroath drew level in the 71st minute when Iain Dobbins headed home from close range. A minute later Fotheringham was sent off after a second yellow, before Pat Clarke lashed home the winner from 12 yards with six minutes remaining.
Arbroath’s hopes of taking anything from high flying Cowdenbeath were significantly dented when Paul Watson was sent off after just 20 minutes for a second bookable offence. The Lichties were already 1-0 down at the time, Liam Buchanan having headed home after just three minutes. The visitors battled back, however, and drew level in the 27th minute when Pat Clarke headed a jay Stein corner beyond David Hay. An upset seemed on the cards when Steven Cook fired the Maroons ahead on the hour mark but the Blue Brazil hit back strongly with tow goals in as many minutes. Buchanan shot past Peat from 16 yards then Andy Jackson fired low into the net from 12 yards.
