  • Signed For Arbroath

  • Having made the long journey south from Orkney on Thursday evening to Stonehaven, I had a day to recover prior to setting off for Gayfield to see my first competitive match of the new season. Passing near to Dingwall, on the road south, I recalled the superb sunshine and Lichties fighting display on the first day of last season when they got a great win at Victoria Park. Waking up on Saturday morning, I found that it was yet another typical Scottish summer’s day – yes it was pissing down. Heading down to Arbroath early to meet up with John Boyle, one of the many Web player sponsors who was over on holiday from North America, in Tutties to collect his £25 the weather did dry up and I was sure I saw a glimpse of blue sky through the clouds.

  • First Goal - Alloa 0 - 3 Arbroath

Travelling down to Recreation Park for our first away game of the season, the talk on the supporters bus revolved around our injury worries and a mystery trialist, with Dunfermline connections, who was likely to feature during the afternoon. McGlashan and Cargill were definitely out and there was a question mark over Flo who we severely missed in our last games. There was hope that the performance against Alloa would be a significant improvement on our last 2 dreadful matches. On arrival at the ground it was surprising to find that there was no segregation in place – I thought that this was compulsory in the first division and several of the supporters voiced an opinion on the matter. The Lichties lined up as follows; Hinchcliffe, Tait, Florence, Mystery Trialist, Ritchie, Cusick, Brownlie, McAuley, McDowell, Henslee and Feroz. On the bench we had Gow, McInally, Heenan, Spink and Swankie. Surprisingly Currie did not feature in JB’s plans.

  • Queens extended their recent run of success to five wins and a draw from their last seven games but were made to work far harder than they really should have done against an average Arbroath side. The match was played in poor conditions, with driving rain throughout adding to a bitterly cold breeze but at 2-0 up early in the second half and facing ten men, we really shouldn't have ended up clinging on for the final whistle. John Connolly made three changes to the team which hammered St Mirren last week. Jon Crawford returned to face his old team in place of Derek Anderson, absent through work commitments. Peter Weatherson, suspended last week, returned in place of John O'Neill and Derek Lyle stepped back into the starting line up at the expense of Paul Shields. Last week's other suspended player Brian McColligan found a seat on the bench alongside O'Neill, Atkinson, McAlpine and Colin Scott.

  • Last Appearance - Arbroath 2 - 3 St Johnstone

Rumours that Jordan Tait had joined Raith Rovers seemed to be confirmed by his absence from the team sheet, a great loss to the club, one of our finest and most consistent players, but good luck in your return to full time football Jordan. Also in Kirkcaldy was Paul Browne returning after his loan spell, another genuine loss. I was in the depths of despair at the thought of Gary Bowman leaving, but this was tempered with the joy of knowing that Baby Brownlie will now make the left midfield berth his own for the rest of the season.
