  Mercer signed from Queen's Park upon our promotion from the Third Division in 1998 and spent 4 years at Gayfield where he was a popular figure with the fans and he left on a high having helped the club gain promotion from the Second Division during the 01-02 season.

• Debut - Arbroath 0 - 1 Clydebank

  It was a rare sunny summer, especially fo this year, Saturday which saw a poor crowd attend the Lichties first competitive match of the new season against newly promoted, to the First Division, Clydebank in the first round of the "No Name" League Cup. The winners of this match will face Raith Rovers at Starks Park Kirkcaldy next Saturday. The fans were looking positively towards the match saying that if both us and East Fife, who were playing Partick Thistle today, lost then our Tuesday night League match at Gayfield would be rearranged for next Saturday. I had to decline an invitation, from Lewis, to a corporate day out at Dingwall to watch Ross County play Montrose (Bus from Aberdeen, lunch, drinks etc.) but the lure of the Lichties was greater than that of watching a couple of lower division teams play!!.

• First Goal - Forfar 1 - 3 Arbroath

  The rain promised for Saturday afternoon arrived early in Stoney with the first drops falling before 10am and by 11am the wind was howling and the rain lashing down. Helping to deliver large purchases after our morning charity Jumble sale I got drenched and it was no surprise when Martin and I were geting ready to leave, despite Teletext saying the match was on, we heard Radio Scotland reporting that the game was off and due to be played at Station Park, Forfar on Monday night at 7.30.

  Monday, October 26th, 1998

• Last Goal - Arbroath 2 - 0 Berwick Rangers

  Today sees us take on our English rivals (I am not sure how the Racial Equalities bunch will take this) but we are playing the team made famous by a player manager called Jock Wallace who, on the strength of one win, found himself manager of Glasgow Rangers. Today's match is the most important match the Lichties have taken part in for nearly 30 years - forget about the insignificant local derbies against Montrose (just a shame some sad folk cannot) - this is it - our chance to be in the top 22 of Scottish Football - fair enough we will never make it into top 12 as we do not have the ground qualifications (but neither do Ayr, Falkirk, Inverness CT and others). We will not forget the part that Dave Baikie had in getting us out of the Third Division and establishing us in the Second but praise must go to John Brownlie from taking us from the nether regions of the Second Division to the verge of promotion to the First Division. Fair enough we may not be up there for long but we are not going to get much additional local support no matter where we are so we might as well go up and get the benefit of the visiting support to swell our crowds for a season. Should we blow it in the last 2 games we need to remember that we are only in the position we find ourselves due to JB under whom we have only lost 4 league matches since the end of September when he took over. The fans are returning to Gayfield today from all parts of the UK for this match and hopefully we can strive the team on to a victory.

• Last Appearance - Airdrie (Old) 2 - 0 Arbroath

  On a grey afternoon, we got a chance to see what it must be like to play in the SPL, in a three-quarter empty all seated stadium, two teams played out a meaningless match. It may well be Airdrie’s last every home fixture and although they ran out deserved 2-0 winners it was one of the poorest matches played in their history.
