Biography

Clark started playing aged 14 with Battlefield and after one season in the juveniles he was signed by junior team Rovers. After spending five seasons there he impressed the Arbroath committee enough to be signed up at Gayfield in the summer of 1898.

Clark established himself as our first choice left back with Dave Cargill moving forward to play as a half, and in just his first season at Gayfield he was selected to represent Forfarshire. At the start of the 1899-00 he was appointed vice captain to Johin Carrie, with whom he had formed a formidable partnership which would continue up until Carrie's injury in September 1903 saw him retire.

Clark was the regular penalty taker for the team throughout his time at Gayfield, due to his superb left foot and he was also referred to as having an excllent kick, a clean header and a fearless tackle, all attributes which saw him viewed as the best left back in the North of Scotland throughout his playing career.

Clark was extremely loyal to the club turning down many offers from England over the years to stay and on 21st August 1907, after 9 seasons and over 270 competitive appearances, Clark's benefit match was played against Hibs at Gayfield.

Sadly the 1907-08 season was Clark's 10th and last at Gayfield, and he left the club that summer before joining Montrose on 3rd September 1908. In Clark's second season at Links Park he was appointed captain.
