Biography

Dilly played locally for North End and played two trial games in County League fixtures towards the end of the 1899-00 season, as well as playing against us for Hearts in John Carrie's testimonial. However Dilly turned down signing for Hearts, and their loss was our gain when Dilly signed on professional terms at Gayfield that summer.

Dilly established himself in the team quickly, and was picked for Forfarshire in January 1901 after his impressive performances with other teams already keeping tabs on Dilly.

After an equally impressive second season at Gayfield, Dilly was signed by Everton straight after a friendly match against them on 30th April 1902. The Arbroath committee complained regarding the 'tapping up' of Dilly and during the summer Everton were ordered to pay compensation to the club for their actions, which amounted too £25.

Later in his career Dilly went on to play for West Brom, Derby County, Bradford Park Avenue, Walsall, Shrewsbury Town, Worcester City and finally a brief spell at Kidderminster Harriers.
