William was given a chance in the team during the 1902-03 season and the Cameron Highlanders man took his opportunity and impressed so much in the few games he played that he was given a trial by Hearts and signed by them in late May 1903.
He went on to play for Motherwell, Portsmouth, West Ham and Aberdeen where he signed in the summer of 1906 but after playing for the first few months of their season he requested to leave after dropping out the team and he signed up at Gayfield in late November 1906.
He was a regular in the team up until September 1907 when he was suspended for a month for on field fighting during a Qualifying Cup tie against Montrose. After coming back into the team, William lost his place towards the end of February 1908 and he left the club at the end of the season to move to Montrose, where he continued to play for several further seasons before signing back up at Gayfield in the summer of 1912.
He was given the captains role during his first season back and over the next few seasons he covered a variety of positions, playing in the back line, in his now regular right half position and as a forward up until we ceased football operations in May 1916 due to WW1.
