David playing for Dauntless locally and impressed enough for Forfar Athletic to swoop in and sign him aged just 17 in the summer of 1901, and he quickly established himself in their team over the following two seasons. He was persuaded to join his local senior club and signed up at Gayfield in early May 1903, and he played in our final friendly match of the season against an Arbroath Junior Select.
The following season he impressed up and down the country as the club won the Scottish Qualifying Cup in November 1903 and his quick and tricky wing play was a huge factor in the success. Bigger teams began to take note and in March 1904 it was Woolwich Arsenal who signed the left winger. David would go on to make 168 appearances for the London club over two spells, as well as playing for Leyton and a spell with Merthyr Town.
He later returned to Scotland and featured for Hearts, Clyde and Dunfermline during the 1919-20 season, before returning to Arbroath and signing back up at Gayfield in late August 1920. During the 1920-21 season, David was a regular in the team but the following campaign he dropped down the pecking order and he left the club that summer and went on to sign for the newly formed Arbroath Athletic in August 1922.
